Serendipity seems to be playing a strong role in my life lately...
Today is my birthday.
Just a few days ago, I finally cracked open a book that I have owned for a couple of months now, Single Exposures by Brooks Jensen. Jensen is the editor of LensWork, perhaps the most beautiful photography magazine on the market. He subtitled the book, "Random Observations on Photography, Art & Creativity."
Right from the introduction, his words resonated with me. Though Jensen focuses on photography, it's easy to see his relevance to the fine bloggers assembled here:
"This book is the result having clearly set out not to write a book. Oh well...
For ten years, such observations (fleeting or unusual thoughts that he indentifies as contributing to his understanding pf photography and the creative life) accumulated as little scraps of paper and notes gathered in odd places around my office. I never knew quite what to do with these ideas until the Internet provided the perfect opportunity. I learned about blogging. Blogging is a concantenated word short for web log and in most cases takes the form of personal diary or, more recently, a running commentary on politics or the news of the day. It was natural for me to realize this was the perfect vehicle to offer my short comments on photography, art and creativity....*
Hence the birth of the Lenswork "audio blog" -- an almost daily addition to our website consisting of random observations, offered in the spirit of "thought for the day." On February 26, 2004 -- the day of my 50th birthday -- I recorded my first audio blog and posted it a www.lenswork.com. I had no reason to type them, no intention of transcribing them, and certainly no idea of assembling them into a book. I've been surprised, overwhelmed, and little shocked that so many people have asked me and encouraged me to do so.
Single Exposures is the result." -- Brooks Jensen
I had little defined purpose in starting my blog; I expected little as well... really I thought I'd just jot things down about the Lions. What a surprise it's turned out to be!
One of the gifts this community has given me is reading the work of several writers here -- so much talent! I already see books forming on some blogs. I can also see commentators, columnists, freelancers and other artists... what comes as a result of these bloggers' efforts has unlimited possibilities.
Since this is a relatively new forum, it's also been a joy to witness writers finding their voices & challenging themselves further.
And to be able to connect with admired writers is just mind-bogglingly wonderful...
I worked with a woman who used her birthday to give gifts... this is my attempt to advance that tradition. Whatever your purpose for being here -- whether or not you know what that is -- I hope you find as much value as I have.
I'll gladly encourage and support the writers here who motivate, inspire and challenge me.
I hope to continue to meet even more talent.
Dream big. Maybe the result of your efforts here will surprise you!
*What I cut from the original quote:
"The problem, however, lies in my stubby little fingers -- all 10 of which would like to be skilled typists, but only eight of them actually are typists and extraordinarily bad ones at that. For the items I contribute to LensWork, my "writing" should be more accuartely be known as "dictating, transcribing, and editing." Whereas most blogs are written (by skilled typists) for reading on the Web, it is much more natural for me to create audio recordings. " --Brooks Jensen
All typos are at the fault of my own two typist fingers (sad, I know), one of which is momentarily slowed by injury. Should they be up to the task, you will actually be seeing a sports post from me in the next 24 hours... a good way to start off a fresh year of life, in my opinion!
Oh, and that crazy Ambassador has been rumbling in my head lately as well... maybe in a couple of weeks...
Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll share my last birthday story with you. Two years ago on my 30th Birthday, my family had this elaborate 30th party for me and needless to say, I was depressed about turning 30. So, a few weeks short of my 31st, I begged everyone not to even acknowledge my birthday. Well, long story short, they made no mention on the 3rd of October and I was more depressed about that than turning 30. This year on my 32nd, I've decided to go with unbirthdays. That is, I will be losing a year from now on. If I could just get the 10 or so gray hairs to cooperate then I'll convince myself. Happy Birthday!
Thanks, justrandy!
I've heard a few guys say they take the 3-0 pretty hard... Buy hey, I like the un-birthdays idea! Any reason to celebrate.
Don't sweat the greys; women find them very attractive!
I rewrote my "About Me," since in the coming year, I hope to work on my organization. I hope will include a better system for reading and commenting on more posts... which means I hope to catch up to more bloggers such as yourself!
GOT -- That's hilarious! May you continue to befuddle the mathematically challenged!
Intellectual -- Celebration here includes donning the Detroit Lions dog tags, dancing, bad jokes and worse singing, dark chocolate... Don't know if that does anything for ya!
To all: Age ain't nothing but a number... You're only as old as you feel... It's great to just be alive...
(Sorry, In case you haven't noticed lately, I get a little goofy and effusive around my b-day. My brother thinks I'm going batty...)
Happy Birthday! Yeah what a great day. I too am like GOT and Celebrate anniversaries of my 29th year! This year will be my 15th anniversary. One more year and I get to redo Sweet 16. This time I know How to KISS! Hope your day is fanatastic and you get every thing you wish for. To all others a Merry Merry Unbirthday to you!
A Boat, bebeath a sunny sky
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July-
Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear-
Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade amd memories die:
Autumn frosts have slain July.
Still she haunts me, phantomwise.
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.
Children yet the tale to hear,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Lovingly shall nestle near.
In a Wonderland they lie
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:
Ever drifting down the stream-
Lingering in the golden gleam-
Life, what is it but a dream?
When the Ambassador TAKES OVER your head... worry!
Though she has had some delicious ideas... hmmmm....
A perfectionist? Perhaps I should strive to be more like you, Shooter! Happy Unbirthday, or whatever you wish to celebrate today... This pilgrim always appreciates your blessings & kindness. I predict a good year!
MC - I'm in total agreement. When I started my blog, I didn't know what to expect. It was my first time blogging and I'm not exactly a computer genius. I figured I'd just write a few articles about things that were important to me, nobody would read them, then I'd drop off. It kinda started out that way, with nobody reading my first couple of posts. But, somewhere along the way, I became hooked. I started reading other people's work and leaving comments. They, in turn, would read mine and leave a comment. Pretty soon, I actually felt like I had made some friends here (which was the last thing I thought of when I started). Now, it's almost to the point that I log on just to see what everyone else is writing aboout. I post my own thoughts less and less, and find myself leaving comments more and more. There are many interesting opinions out there and I love reading them all and debating the issues with fellow bloggers, you especially. I always look forward to reading each new post from you. I know it's going to be something thoughtful and insightful. You are a very intelligent person and you've taught me alot about things I normally wouldn't have enough interest in to learn about. So, thank you for what you have done here. Keep up the good work!!
Happy Birthday to you. Throw down a car bomb for me tonight. If you wish for a ND victory over UCONN when you blow out your candles this evening, I will send you a $10 grandma-like birthday check.
jgrace -- Great to hear your story, thank you... "Hooked" is right! I never expected the friendship element either. These things you compliment me with, I'd also say about you... I always marvel at the legwork and research you put into your posts and am left wondering where you find such great ideas! You've really hit your stride with your weekly feel-good stories... keep those rollin'! I love seeing that quality work make the most popular list. And your comments are so important to all who write! (BTW, If you've never read the magazine ODE, you'd likely enjoy its positive take on news...)
IrishNut -- LOL! What kinda party you think we're throwin' here?!!! Don't know if you'll see this tonight; your game should be on. I'm wishing a little part-Irish birthday luck your way! No need to send the check... my grandma would either write that check to the poor or tell you to take your own luck & ten bucks to the casino!!!
Your birthday? So that's why we didn't get mail yesterday and the banks were closed. Many happy returns, although I have no idea what that expression means. Here's hoping for a happy season of Lions and Tigers for the Lioness.
Dudski - Nothing like having a birthday holiday! This gives me the urge to re-read a certain post of yours on the Presidential Playoff Predictions... that priceless dialogue!
DrCrab - I've yet to meet you, but I am already getting a kick out of you! Between your comment and your blog moniker, I think you're trying to tell me something... LOL!
Thank you all; this has been a memorable and excellent day!
Happy Birthday MCLioness. Guessing by your username, I thought you were a Leo like my wife, but you are a Pisces just like me.
Mine was on the 19th, and let me tell you, having your birthday on a holiday weekend, especially if is the day right before a day you would normally have to be at work.
Happy Birthday to you, Gbrent! Hope yours was wonderful as well. Pisces (right on the cusp!) & Leo sound like a good match.
A nice thing about that holiday being President's Day is that there's really no other obligations attached, unlike say, Christmas. It's more of a free day!
I did have a great day. Thank you for your wishes. I enjoy meeting bloggers and look forward to reading your work! It may take me awhile, as my bio says - I need to organize, but I hope to visit your blog soon!
I'd say I'm more athlete than fan. I hope I can say that all my life.
After Marat Safin, is there anyone else?
Some of my other favorite athletes include: Dmitry Tursunov, Kim Clijsters, Roger Federer, Tedy Bruschi, Cory Schlesinger, Brian McBride, Lynn Hill & Dean Potter.
I truly appreciate any advice or criticism. Thank you.
