Zidane...
Jul 09, 2006 | 1:20PM | report this

..completely lost his marbles and head butted Materazzi and he's off. Now why did he do that. His last ever game as a pro. Now I see...Zidane and Materrazi were jawing and the Italian must've said something about his mum, cos Zidane just lost it...

It must be Italy now or will France be able to hold for PK's...anyway a really bizzare incident.

it must have been something racial, sometimes it is just too much, how many times this season did you see black or minority players losing it, etoo, henry, ronaldinho etc u can't understand it till someone calls you a second rate human being, i assume all of you are from the majority

Italy have lost the crowd support, here's hoping that fatigue overtakes them and France can prevail on penalties.

Come on, he's not 20 anymore. He should be mature enough to ignore anything said to him.
What a disgusting end to a great career.

Doesnt matter what the other player said, he's a pro - and should not have reacted in that manner, end of story.

Ailiwah, spare me. Football is an international sport, and there's likely nobody who ever laced boots that hasn't gotten the "racial" treatment. This is a question of professionalism.

It's a disappointment that Zidane couldn't have responded with the decisive penalty, rather than risking France's chance.

I agree that it was certainly "unprofessional" and and a rotten way for Zidane to end this world cup, but who amongst us hasn't wanted to punk slap some trash-talking bozo. In a world cup that has been stuffed full to the point of constipation of "professionalism"-- professional fouls, professional flops, professional incompetence (refs), and professional treachery, whining, and diving (ronaldo)--I found this final bit of footy theatre somewhat uplifting and inspiring. Say what you like, the oldman played with passion and fire, and he passionately did not put up with the final nasty insults thrown at him. Cheers to you, Zizou ... `and I urinate from great height on Italy's brand of boring defensive flopping trashtalking football.

How do you say #### in French? Zidane?

Zidane has always been graceful in previous games. Always cool, calm & collected, which impressed me about him. I was stunned by his actions. He deservedly received the red car. Nevertheless, Materazzi must have said something very scathing to him. Materazzi had been working on the French since the beginning of the match, starting with Henry and practically taking him out of the game in the first few minutes. I believe he's also the one who fouled Vieira, who then had to leave due to injury. Finally, he works his last bit of magic in trying to provoke Zidane. He must've known what would get him heated. I feel the Italians set the tone for their play early on, for example in their match against the U.S., with Rossi's foul. They wanted to win this at any cost. Unfortunately, Zidane wasn't able to shoulder whatever M. must've said. Sad to see it end the way it did.

I think Zindane was frustrated and tired...that is all. The French then tried a clean up..racial slur. Yeah right. Algerian...what was he called..towel head?
No. The second half the Itals changed to defence...not my choice because it looked like they could have easily out scored the French on offense. They backed up and gave alot of room to Zindane and all he could do was play with the ball and tire himself, which he did. Frustration with not being allowed any good chances(only his header which he #### up)and he knew it was his last game so why not take himself and Materazi out with him. Only surprise was Matterazi got back in.
Shot to the heart area like that could have been deadly! Do not discount that. It was assault and battery not bad sportsmanship. Now he will always be remembered by this...rightly so. French soccer has been disgraced because all they could do is rationalize this. They were lucky the score was not 2-0 which it should have been. Well..result the same anyway.

I agree with you Killick! Cheers to Zidane and Les Blues! Sometimes you have to do what you have to do! It might not be the 'professional' way to handle a situation, but we all have been there. Whatever he said to him, I only wish Zidane could've just ended it in style and pulled a "Rooney" on him and step on his %^$$##@#!!!
MERCI ZIZOU!

Waw Zizou, i really admire the touches and inspiration the guy have for the game. its tuff to go out like that but i think its dues well paid for thoes who will think of using racial slurs, and for thoes who didnt have the gutts to pay it out as victims of such. Matarrazzi got what he deserves. Well done zizou you stoodup for those who couldnt stand for themselves. "LOUD APPLAUSE", all the best in your future. But from the horses mouth MAtarazzi to Zizou " Sorry for hugging you zizou, but your mamma feels better" shame on you Matarrazzi

idane is not a model, he is not a god.

He is a hero, a pure romantic hero, with his brilliance and his flaws.

It was his last game, what a romantic drama ...

Here is a man who prefers defend his family's honour instead taking the most glorious sport trophy, His values are over the derision of a simple game.

It wasn't a game action where Materacist broke him and Zidane headbutt him, no. It was a scene where a man faces another man who hurts him with an insult which becomes a hurt over any law in his mind then he reacted as a man hurt in his honour and headbutted him.

Someone said when you review the scene, at the moment when Zidane just begins to rush to Materacist, if you could stop virtually the scene and say to Zidane "Hey stop, if you do that you will lose everything and the cup !!!" Zidane should have taken one step more to rush and headbutt Materacist.

Zidane is a romantic hero and this is why he is a legend for ever.

Medias said what he's done is shameful, not an example for kids, I say that Zidane is not to be an example, yes he deserves the red card, but you don't have to give education to a kid in front of the TV or do explain the drama in its whole depth, Zidane is just a man with values which go beyond the simple laws o####ame.
FIFA banners on the pitch with "Stop Racism" are a farce.

Zidane's mother is seriously ill and was driven to the hospital in the morning of the final game.
According to BBC, Materazzi said:
"Your mother is a #### and I wish her an ugly death"

Pure nonsence. Zindane uses thrash talk and insults throughout his career. He played for an Italian team too. He was frustrated and helpless and lost his cool. Materazi did not comment about his mother but his sister. Any #### would now it was a taunt. zindane not a ####...I think. He knew what the Itals were doing, waiting for a counter and Z knew that thye French could not attack seriously because of this. He was frustrated with the Itals and his team. This cannot justify what he did. I question his loyalty to France also. He is seen laughing afterwards in a vehicle. Perhaps he should have played for Algeria.
