Michelle Wie Successful at Goofy Golf!
May 05, 2006 | 2:28PM | report this

(Is it just me or does Michelle Wie resemble Goofy of Disney lore?)

The fact that Michelle Wie made the cut at a men's event in Korea is not newsworthy.  It is only intriguing because she has never won a professional event and the fact that she is 16.  She is being heralded as the coming of the next Tiger Woods in a skirt but so far she has not lived up to those lofty expectations.  In my post, Why Michelle Wie Won’t Win, I document her lack of winning on any circuit.  The main reason she has not won is because she insists on playing in venues that she is not ready for, yet.

This week she made the cut on the Korean PGA Tour.  Big deal!  Se Ri Pak did it in 2003 and finished 10th in that event.  No one heard about it back then because Pak's goal in life is not to compete on the men's tour on a regular basis.  Also, the winners or losers in a third rate golf tour are not followed that closely.  The Korean tour is not on par with the Japanese Tour, Nationwide, or even the LPGA.  How many people can recall the winners on the Nationwide Tour each week.

Bragging about making the cut on the Korean tour is like bragging about breaking par at the local putt putt course.  Annika Sorenstam could win on the Korean Tour but chooses to play in the LPGA where it is more competitive.

With the resignation of Hootie Johnson, it may only be a matter of time before Wie is invited to the Master's, which is her life long goal.  (Hopefully the new chairman, Billy Payne, will not allow it but make her earn her way onto the course.  If she does that, then more power to her.)  For me, I don't mind that she wants to compete against the boys, but don't expect me to get all excited when Wie makes a cut.  Since when did making a cut become a big deal?  Isn't the goal to actually "win" the golf tournament?  Michelle Wie's legacy will be one that is remembered more for her attempts to crash the men's tour  than winning fifty times on the LPGA.  If you ask me, Annika Sorenstam will be considered the greatest women's golfer of all time and Wie will be remembered for making a cut on the Korean Tour.

So, Congratulations Michelle Wie for making a cut in a “men’s” event!  For the record, I made 5 holes in ones this weekend at the Beverly Hills Country Club; that is the BHCC Putt Putt course.

I don't think Wie is the best women's golfer ever. Like you said Annika is one of the best around, while Wie is just another rookie. I know it's something that she made the cut, but you don't have Tiger, Phil, Vijay or anyone else that is a huge men's golfer. She may be a good golfer in the future, but right now she's another rookie.

Actually detroit, to me it means nothing that she made the cut over there. Other women have done that so it is no big deal. Now if she makes a cut over here on a regular men's tour event, that is different albeit she plans on playing in men's events where the top contendors are absent. For example, she is playing in the Southern Farm Bureau Classic which is opposite the Scottish Open where all the big time golfers are tuning up for the British Open the following week.

True, true, socal, it's not a big deal that she made the cut because she isn't playing against anyone amazing in the tournament. Good Post socal!

It seems somebody's a Wie bit obsessed with Michelle.

demon, thanks for stopping in. Travis, I like many would love to see Wie do very well. I just think she is going about it in the worst possible way. Here career and her best playing days will be squandered if she continues trying to play against the boys. Go against the women and see how you stack up before trying against the men. If Annika can't do it, what makes her think she can?

If Goofy were as beautiful I would like cartoons a lot more. She is kinda different than the animated character. I don't watch golf much, but if she is in contention to win a tournament you can bet I am interested to see it, not for her looks but for her gender and age.
Baseball utility players are more talented than the best golfers, anyway.

Ed those kind of thoughts will land you in jail. As for utitily baseball players being more athletic than golfers, I would agree for some, but not all.

Crabman, thanks for stopping in and making a comment. It was mean of me to bring up her looks, but it is uncanny isn't it.

I disagree with all this bashing. Read my blog for my post.

I wouldn't call Wie ugly by any means. I should be so thin and goofy-looking.

Wonder how many bloggers would like her a bit more if she were built better on top. Or if she created her own cleavage with a wonder-bra. If she'd let it all hang out.

That's all the more I feel I can add - I don't care at all for golf.

I don't see the resemblance with Wie and Goofy. I agree with PTI's Mike Wilbon, he says that she should stay on the LPGA tour and win some of those touraments before trying these mens tournaments.

she's decent. she's got height so it makes her look older than she is. she's asian, so we cant expect too much on top. but i'll wait till she gets legal before i throw her centerfold up in the gameroom.

serena - thats the baddest sports body of all time. i'd give her my whole paycheck

Josette, I am only teasing about Wie's looks. I sort of like her Asian beauty. It's not always about boobs. I just give her a hard time for not playing on the LPGA.

Demon, wait for legality. As for Serena, too masculine for me. Big Boobs, but her arms are bigger than mine and so are her thighs.

Bob, once again, the looks are not important. I was only teasing, she is actually attractive. This post is really about how un-newsworthy it is to make the cut at a Korean event. It would be like Tiger making the cut the NCAA.

I don't follow many golfers, but I have never seen a golfer prettier than Wie. And I am projecting her as an adult, (I am happily married with my own daughters, by the way). My observations don't go sexual (i.e. statutory or any such nonsense). I am only opining that to me, she is a far cry from Goofy or Daisy. Or even Minnie Mouse.

I'd make out with Michelle, even though a lot of people in law enforcement would be all bent about it.

I'd also make out with Tiger's wife, despite Tiger getting bent about it.

Discuss.

Am I the only one who thinks it's newsworthy when a 16-year-old girl makes the cut at a tour event? Sure, the Korean Tour is a few grades below the PGA, but you can't help but be impressed when a young woman who isn't even old enough to vote outplays a handful of seasoned professionals.

I do agree that her obsession with playing with the men may brand her as a "novelty", but after a few years of grinding her game on whatever tour she chooses to play, she may very well be ready to play with the big boys. She's already had three top-three finishes in the last four LPGA majors, and I have a feeling that before she's of legal drinking age, she's going to break through in a major way.

Couldn't agree with you more. No doubt she's a phenom. But until she consistently performs better against her own members on the LPGA Tour, there's no hiding the fact that she's becoming somewhat of a circus sideshow. It's not good for the stae of women's golf. Sorenstaam knew that from her excursion onto the men's side of the fence albeit that she failed admirably. But she did it just the once and that was it. Wie's advisors are pointing her in the wrong direction.

Nappy, As for Wie, it isn't newsworthy when Se Ri Pak makes that same cut two years ago. Many of the LPGA women can make the cut at the Korean Open. Pak has, now Wie, which means Creamer or Sorenstam could make that cut. Just because you can, does not make it news.

I agree - Creamer and Sorenstam could make the cut over there. Creamer and Sorenstam aren't 16 years old. Her age (and, of course, gender) is what makes this newsworthy.

Creamer is just out of college. Morgan Pressel who is 18, could make the cut. It's just not that hard or newsworthy. Her handlers want it to be because of endorsement money. When Se Ri made the cut two years ago, it was no big deal. Still isn't.
